Normally, when you have a pilot light that won't stay lit, it's because the gas line that runs from the gas valve on the water heater to where the pilot light is, it's dirty and water heater pilot light won t stay lit. By having a faulty thermocouple you will still be able to light the pilot light but it will not stay lit.

Boozefighter spoonman water heater keeps needing lit? Now when i try to lit pilot light per instruction, it won't light up. I can light the pilot light, but when i release the valve, it goes out.

The gas pilot will not stay lit. Just this morning, with no warning, the pilot light on our water heater went out. This allows the gas to flow long enough to heat up the thermocouple and generate current. If it's your pilot light that keeps going out, a new thermocouple won't fix that problem.
